Round three of the Eastern motocross championships, sponsored by Bickers Lifting, was hosted by the Norwich Vikings club at their Cadders Hill circuit at Lyng in Norfolk on Sunday. Overnight rain on Saturday saw the circuit in prime condition for racing, and after the morning's timed practise sessions for the 200 riders, the scene was set for 15 race programme.
Current British championship leader Jake Nicholls, had set the fastest times in practise, and when the gate dropped for the first twenty minute long experts race, it was Nicholls on his Buildbase sponsored Honda who led the forty strong pack followed by Lewis Tombs, current champion, Luke Benstead, and Norwich club's Ben Cole. Local star, Luke Parker and teenager Tom Grimshaw fought through the pack in a high speed battle, until Parker made a mistake to drop back to 6th at the finish. Meanwhile, Nicholls had built up a big lead to take an easy win, with Tombs holding off Benstead for second place. Grimshaw was fourth with Suffolk's Shaun Southgate in fifth after a charge through the pack.
The second experts race saw Tombs on his smaller 250cc Husqvarna taking the holeshot. Nicholls had changed his rear tyre before the race, but spun his bike on the line, and when the leaders reappeared at the end of lap one, he was down in 8th place. Benstead, Southgate and Parker, along with teenager George Grigg Pettitt, were battling for second place, but Parker soon dropped out with a bike problem, and it was Southgate who was chasing Tombs at the front. On lap five, Nicholls passed Southgate and set about catching the race leader, leaving Southgate, Benstead and Grigg Pettitt disputing third place. Nicholls took over the lead on lap seven of ten, to record his second win, chased home by the fast riding Tombs, with Benstead passing Southgate on the last lap for third place. Suffolk youngster, Grigg Pettitt had a great ride for 5th, just ahead of sixteen year old Grimshaw, and the popular Basildon rider, Steve Bixby.
Nicholls charged to his third win of the day in race three, with Tombs and Southgate involved in a close battle for second place, and although Southgate twice managed to pass Tombs, the verdict finally went to the Bury St Edmunds MX2 rider. Behind them, Grigg Pettitt and his close friend Tom Grimshaw, enjoyed a close scrap throughout for fourth place, with Grimshaw just taking the verdict. Benstead made a sluggish start, but worked hard to get to sixth ahead of Bixby and Braintree teenager, Ben Clark.
The Eastern junior grade championships were again dominated by Kings Lynn's Ryan Watts, who extended his lead in the series with three race wins. There was some fast and furious racing among the forty fastest juniors, and in race one, Aaron Framingham was second to Watts, holding off a fierce challenge from Alex Hornsby and Jordan Pasquale. Aaron Hopkins led race two for a lap before Watts took over to win by a big margin. Once again, the battle for second place was intense, with Pasquale just beating local rider, Connor Baldry. Framingham was fourth, just ahead of Ryan Powley. Watts was in a class of his own again in the third race with Hornsby second throughout the fifteen minute plus a lap race. Cambridgeshire's Carl Miller had his best finish on the day to claim third, chased home by Baldry and Powley.
In the support races, Luke Nolan took all three race wins in the group A category. Group B saw veteran Mark Goodson also recording three wins, and although Wayne Fulcher won the first race in the C group, the overall went to Chris Elvin, who had two wins and an eighth place. Mark Goodson's son, Scott, was second overall ahead of Fulcher.
Round four of this popular and well supported series, is on 17th June at the Mildenhall circuit, where the hosts are the Littleport club.
